Growing Instructions
Hippeastrum (Amaryllis) is a tender bulb and should be planted in pots indoors throughout most of North America. To grow indoors as a houseplant, expand the soil block included with the kit according to the directions, then fill about half the pot with the planting medium. Set the bulb on top of the soil, filling in around the bulb to hold it in place. Leave the top third of the bulb exposed above the soil level and allow room in the pot for watering. Amaryllis bulbs prefer normal room temperatures, and exposure to bright light helps keep the stems shorter. As the flower stalk grows toward the light, rotate the pot frequently to prevent toppling. Care Tip
Some gardeners treat Amaryllis as annuals and discard them after flowering, but they can often be encouraged to rebloom the following year. After flowering, cut off the flower stalk just above the neck of the bulb, leaving the foliage in place so it can help rebuild the bulb for future blooming. Place the pot in a sunny window and water only when the soil is dry. Fertilize regularly. After all danger of frost has passed, move the pot outdoors until fall, then bring it back inside before frost. Once the foliage has been removed, allow the potted bulb to rest in a cool, dry place for about 10 weeks. Do not water during the rest period. Afterward, restart the growing process as directed above.
