Muscari, also commonly known as Grape Hyacinths, are spring flowering bulbs that should be planted in the fall. Each produces a cluster of narrow strap-shaped, basal leaves, usually appearing just before the flowers. Leafless flower stems bear dense spikes of small flowers. These dainty, grape-like clusters of color make a dramatic underplanting for taller bulbs of nearly any color. Planted en masse, in broad informal sweeps, they create an unforgettable show! Muscari colonize and naturalize readily, are self-seeding under ideal conditions, and thrive for many years to come with little care or maintenance. When in bloom, feel free to cut some flowers for tiny, perfect vase bouquets.

Growing Instructions
Plant in the fall, before the first frost hardens the soil. Dig a hole to the required depth. Place bulb in hole, pointed side up. Cover with soil and water thoroughly. Mulch in extreme climates.
For container planting, bury the bulb three times as deep as the bulb is wide. In zones 6 and below, you will need to protect your bulb containers. Place them near the foundation of the house or other structure. In zones 3-5, place the container in an unheated garage or shed.
After blooming, leave the bulbs in place so plants can clump or reseed. Leave foliage in place after blooming. This lets the bulb grow and strengthen for future planting by allowing photosynthesis to take place, creating food from the leaves soaking in the sunlight. Foliage may be removed when leaves turn yellow and die back.
Divide only when containers or planting spaces become too crowded. Propagate in the fall by division after they have been chilled for four weeks in a moist medium.
Care Tip
Muscari prefers cool, moist soil. An easy way to plant muscari is to simply dig out an area, scatter a large number of bulbs then cover with soil. This creates an effortless, natural look in the spring garden.
Force muscari bulbs indoors in winter by planting in containers in late fall. Water well and place in a cool, dark place (around 40ºF) for at least 15-17 weeks.
